The first day of Chhath Puja is known as Nahay Khay, which means 'bathe and eat'. Devotees take holy dip in river or pond, and bring the sacred water home. After bathing, they prepare a simple vegetarian meal, which marks the last meal before the rigorous fasting begins. The purpose of Nahay Khay is to cleanse the body and mind.
