India's withdrawal from its only full-fledged overseas airbase began in 2022, but came to light last month. India had built and maintained Tajikistan's Ayni airbase for the last two decades, but began withdrawing after a bilateral agreement between Tajikistan and India ended. Tajikistan government was reluctant to renew the lease for the airbase due to pressure from China and Russia.
